Artistic Licence ArtNet

The ArtNet standard allows multiple universes of DMX512 data to be transmitted across an Ethernet network using standard cat5 cable. This provides a very economical solution for the distribution of lighting data.

Issues such as 'merging' are built into the standard and no longer require separate products. An added benefit is the wide range of options offered by Ethernet: Radio Ethernet is now widely available, providing low cost options for 'Radio DMX' solutions.

Perhaps most importantly though, because the ArtNet protocol has been released as a royalty-free public domain standard, an increasing number of supporting manufacturers are implementing it. This is good news in terms of inter-manufacturer product compatibility and means that the custome is not 'locked-in' to a manufacturers proprietary Ethernet standard.
