Cable Wiring Standards
There are many standards for the identification of multicore & multipair cables, these colour codes are offered as a guidance in allocating circuits and investigating existing installations.
Many installers abbreviate colours to their first and last letters - BK for black, BN for brown. Where two colours are given, the first colour is the primary colour (usually the base colour), with the second applied as thin bands or stripes. Multipair cables have repeated solid colours as the primaries, and the pair number is identified by the colour of the other half of the pair. Care must be taken when preparing such cables to ensure the correct pairing is maintained.
