Conversion Data - Length, Area & VolumeWhere applicable, tables on the left convert metric to imperial, whilst those on the right convert from imperial to metric. For example, to convert from metres to feet, use the first table, and multiply the length in metres by 3.281 to give the distance in feet. LengthThere are 10 millimetres (mm) to 1 centimetre (cm) and 100 centimetres to 1 metre (m). One kilometre (km) is 1000 metres. There are 12 inches (in) to 1 foot (ft) and 3 feet to 1 yard (yd). One land mile (statute mile) is 1,760 yards whereas one nautical mile is 2,025 yards. There are 1000 mils (mil) in one inch although these are not commonly used.
Other measurementsA number of other older or uncommon measurements are given here for reference, as they are still occasionally encountered.
AreaThere are 100 square millimetres (mm²) to 1 square centimetre (cm²) and 10,000 square centimetres to 1 square metre (m²). Visually this is a square with sides of length 100cm. There are 144 Square inches (in²) to 1 square foot (ft²) and 9 square feet to 1 square yard (yd²). 1 acre is 4,840 square yards, whilst 1 square mile is 640 acres.
Volume1 cubic metre (m³) is visually a cube with sides of 1 metre (100 centimetres), or a total of 1,000,000 cubic centimetres (cm³)! 1 cubic foot (ft³) is 1,728 cubic inches (in³) and there are 27 cubic feet in 1 cubic yard (yd³).
Liquid VolumeThere are 1,000 millitres (ml) in 1 litre (l), and 10 millitres in a centilitre (cl). There are 20 fluid ounces (floz) in a (British) pint (pt) and 8 pints to 1 gallon (gal). An American pint is 16 fluid ounces.
